behind the scenes

Last month, I had the pleasure of spending the afternoon with old friends for a maternity session. Although the main focus was the soon-to-be-parents, everyone had their chance in front of the camera – even me!

We had a point-and-shoot camera with us and took a lot of really funny “behind the scenes” shots. Some of them I like (see bio pic above) and some of them are pretty embarassing (see below).

That is me a 1/2 second after getting my high heel stuck deep in the wet grass. You can actually see the chunk of sod flying through the air as my heel dislodged. It was unfortunate. And yes, I’m ok. Thanks for asking.

The funniest part was seeing what I look like while I shoot. For me, sessions happen so fast. We get started and in the blink of an eye we’re finished. The details of what happens in between are usually a blur left to be pieced together through the images taken. I never realized that I do things like this:

Lovely, huh? Apparently I didn’t think twice to twist myself into a knot to get the angle I needed! Look at the great shot that came from that super awkward head-in-ground ostrich pose. Totally worth it.

I’ll let you in on a little secret - I’m always sore the day after a session. While shooting, I basically squat, hold for ten seconds, take a series of shots, stand, run a to a new angle (or chase an energetic child in most cases), squat, hold for ten seconds, take another round of shots. Repeat. For two hours. It’s quite the little workout.

I think the strained quads and wet knees paid off. This is one of my favorite series of shots from the whole shoot. Again, totally worth it.

deb wood - No need to go to the gym when you get that kind of workout. What a fun way to work off the Valentine’s Day chocolates.February 21, 2009 – 10:12 pm

Kari Whitaker - Amanda, your site, blog and portfolio are all awesome! So curious to know what camera and lens you shoot with?! I’m so proud of you… the work is really great.February 19, 2009 – 9:31 pm
