As part of my photography work, I pour over literally thousands of images from children’s photography sessions as I narrow them down to edit. I’m here to tell you that, contrary to popular belief, all babies don’t look the same. I admit that I used to think they did too. You know what else? All babies don’t act the same either. I kinda-sorta used to think that too. Each baby has his own unique personality right from the beginning. Realizing this has been one of the most rewarding – and most challenging – parts of photographing children.
Meet Hayden. He is my husband’s sister’s husband’s sister’s baby (aren’t family trees fun?). Technically he is of no relation to me, but he is so darn cute that I might pretend like he is for just a little while. Hayden is THE most chilled out baby that I have ever met. Seriously. During Cade’s birthday party, he never once fussed. He just sat contently with whoever was holding him then. After the birthday cake chaos was over, I looked up at Hayden to see if he was shaken too. Nope. He was just hanging there – literally – in someone’s arms taking it all in. Later, as the party was ending, someone sat him in the floor near me. Someone should have warned him – you can’t sit by me if you don’t want your picture taken. Especially if you are a precious eight-month-old boy with big green eyes. But I started snapping shots, and he didn’t even flinch. I think he may have even secretly enjoyed it. Here a few of my favorites.
