deja vu

Are you, like, soooo sick of hearing (or is it reading?) me talk (write?) about our family trip to the beach? I’ve been knee deep in pictures from the trip for a little more than two weeks, so I am. I finally have them all sorted, culled, edited and posted — no wonder I never actually get around to the “ordered” part of the process.  Before I let this series of pictures move on to be part of blog history, I have one more I want to share.

Last summer, when ideas of professional photography first started invading my thoughts, my nephew Cade was my most easily accessible subject. We spent an hour or so in the front yard of my sister-in-law’s house one afternoon, and wound up with some really great shots. Several of those images are all-time favorites of mine and are still prominent on my website today.

When we were on the aforementioned beach vacation a few weeks ago, we had an impromtu photo session late one afternoon. This was one of the resulting images:

When I take a photo, I almost always envision the end result. I think ahead to the post-processing, mentally commit the image to its respective blog post, decide whether it is best suited for a 5×7 desk frame or a 16×20 wall canvas, and the list goes on and on. You should see the mental lists I make when I go to bed at night — it’s a wonder I ever sleep!

As I snapped the photo above, I instantly recognized that I had seen that face before. That sweet, thoughtful, concentrated face. I’m sure I’ve actually seen it dozens of times in real life, but seeing it through the camera lens gave me the perspective I needed to really “see” that moment and treasure it. And THAT, my friends, is why I LOVE photography.
