the big zucchini

Back in April, I told you about our summer project aka “the garden”. The plants have grow bigger and taller each day, but have produced very little. Allen only recently picked his first batch of green peppers. I was like a proud momma oohing and ahhing over a good report card. Our vegetables are still little, but I have high hopes for what they will become.

Then yesterday the big zucchini happened. Allen had been out of town for a friend’s birthday and stopped at his brother’s house on the way home. Farmer Shane has a natural knack for growing some serious food and sent Allen home with a bag full. When he pulled this giant zucchini out of the bag I gasped. I wish I could take credit for growing this Arnold Schwarzenegger sized zucchini in OUR garden, but I’m afraid our tiny fruits will never compare.

I was so amazed I had to take a picture. Now keep in mind, my husband has very normal-sized man hands. This zucchini is THAT big. I was all, like, Honey, I’ve got to show this to the people in the world wide web. They ain’t never gonna believe how big this thing is. Hold up that’n over yonder so we can show em’. Hey, we’re from Alabama and big zucchini’s are good entertainment – I had to throw in a little southern sterotype!

The smaller zucchini on top is your average sized, large zucchini from the grocery store. The other is it’s mondo big brother. And because I can’t leave well enough alone, in addition to taking a picture I weighed the silly things. The one on the top – 8 ounces. The one on the bottom – 2 pounds, 9 ounces. Serious business, I’m not making that up! I am off to water our garden with miracle grow for the next three years to see if I can even come close to Farmer Shane. I’m optimistic, but I’m not placing any bets…

P.S. For those of you who don’t personally know us, yes, we are from Alabama, but no Shane is not REALLY a farmer. I just feel inclined to call him that from now until forever because of his master skill and this zucchini wonder. Amen.

sheree pair - DJ–we may not really want to know his “secrets.” But, I must say that I was privileged to receive one of the Arnold Schw. zuchinnis that was even larger than that one. I cut it into chunks and added it to spaghetti sauce. It was delicious!June 24, 2009 – 8:49 am
