why i love photoshop

Mike’s sister and her boyfriend were also staying at Mike and Ashley’s last weekend, and they brought along their loveable Dachshund. This is Floyd.

Isn’t he a sweet puppy? I don’t know if he is still technically a puppy, but I call all dogs “puppy” so we’ll just go with it. I like to call him a “weenie puppy” but I’m weird like that. I had a little mini session with Floyd in the backyard on Saturday afternoon before dinner. I got some pretty cute shots that I’ll share with you later this week. Until then, I am going to use this shot of Floyd to illustrate why Photoshop is the bomb dot com. Did I really just say that?

Straight out of the camera, this shot is ok, but doesn’t knock my socks off. Floyd is slightly underexposed, and the pesky chair is distracting. Normally, I would have just deleted a picture like this. When I’m editing entire sessions, I don’t have the time or patience to rescue bad pictures. But I only had a few of Floyd, and there is something about the image that I really like. So I cloned the chair, lightened it up, increased the contrast, and voila – a much better picture.

It’s definitely not perfect, but I like it. Like I always say, “Magic, not miracles.” What do you think? Would you have left it alone? Made it brighter? Cropped it tight? Kept the chair? Erased the dog? Inquiring minds want to know.

Rossi - I LOVE this picture! Floyd is a great name for a weiner dog. I should know. ;) June 29, 2009 – 12:26 pm

ashley - I agree with Jen..June 6, 2009 – 6:55 am

deb wood - As a woman who LOVES her dog, the first photo is sweet. The edited version is a keeper worthy of a frame or scrapbook page. Good work.June 5, 2009 – 8:30 am

Rachel - I know how you did the chair, and it’s a touch painstaking (clone/stamp, repeat…)! Way to have more patients than I, my lady love. All those years of elaborate scrapbook pages are paying off in all sorts of ways.June 4, 2009 – 10:47 am

robin - i agree with the other two posts…wow, what a difference.June 4, 2009 – 8:53 am

jennifer - Can i just hop in your brain for one day please? I won’t move in; I won’t “edit” it; I just want to watch it work for one day straight, please ma’m. :) I love reading your blog. You really put your thoughts into words (duh, that’s what blogging is), but not everyone’s thoughts are as interesting to hear about as yours. You know I used to say it would be intersting to be your boyfriend because then I would get to hear all your thoughts all the time! Anywho, I like the chair being removed and (don’t know the technical terms) but I like the “brighter” version of the dog. You are good at what you do! You CAN quit your day job. :) June 4, 2009 – 8:23 am

Hillary - I want a lesson on how in the world you did that. I can do some good editing, but seemlessly erasing the chair is a FEAT!!!June 3, 2009 – 9:07 pm
