we’re going to the zoo

On Sunday afternoon, we ventured deep into the wilderness for an exotic safari. But we weren’t exactly in Africa… more like Mt. Brook, and more specifically, the Birmingham Zoo. It had been a very, very long time since I had been to the zoo, and I have to admit I wasn’t sure what to expect. We met my mother-in-law and nephew for a stroll through the exhibits and made our way over to the children’s zoo. Below are some highlights of our day. Of course I have to mention the animals…

… but this little monkey was the main attraction. Heavens to Betsy I love that kid. He is at the age where he can do just enough to get into trouble. Sitting still for pictures was not an option, so I didn’t even try. But I did get a couple of really cute expressions the few times I was able to get him to look my way. Notice the oh-so-appropriate zoo jumper. I’d be willing to bet that was the handiwork of one Sheree Pair. Super cute!

At the aquarium getting fish species lessons from Uncle Al. That Allen sure knows his fish. Cade and I are probably right about at the same level of fish knowledge, but we’re learning…

The first of two high points of the day was seeing the train pass by. Just the sound of the whistle blowing “Choo-Choo!” was enough to send Cade into fits. This was his reaction as it came into sight.

The second was the water park fountains in the children’s zoo. The water shoots up out of the ground from several fountains in intervals. When two or three suddenly shut off, two or three more turn on. It’s a guessing game as to which will come on when. We spent the most time here laughing in stitches as Cade ran from one water spout to the next to the next to the next. He absolutely loved it. It started out innocently enough as he tested the water.

The first full splash to the face was a little startling, but it totally cracked him up. After that it was on. He couldn’t get enough and continually stood right on top of the water spouts getting doused in the face every time. For the photo geeks out there like me, these next pictures were taken at 2.8 1/6400 which made for some killer water-drop-frozen-in-mid-air shots.

After tiring out at the fountains, we dried off and took one last lap through the petting zoo, stopping for some fun on the big red tractor.

Hey Cade, did you have fun at the zoo with us? Yeah, that’s what I thought… Oh, and can I have one of your goldfish? Pleeease?
