My husband, Allen, and I are a team in the truest sense of the word. In both life and photography. There is rarely a decision made in regards to my business that I don’t run by him first, and we can tag team a dishwasher in 90 seconds flat. A week or so ago, I photographed this amazing family. The logistics of our Sunday afternoon allowed Allen to be with me at the shoot. I tease him that he is the best PR tool I have. He is a natural extrovert and could hold an intelligent conversation with a brick wall.
I tasked him with holding my backup camera which already had one lens attached and was set to full manual mode. I was so caught up in what I was doing I never even noticed that he was picking off shots here and there as well. I have very few photos of myself in action – it’s kinda hard when you’re HOLDING the camera! – so it was a fun surprise to see these images run across the screen as I downloaded my memory cards that night.

He did pretty good shooting manual, huh? The truth is that a professional DSLR is a beast of a camera. There are a lot of controls and functions that take a lot of experience to master. I have slowly been teaching Allen the basics of using my camera (the red-dot-goes-on-the-eye thing is a favorite), and he is getting pretty darn good. I thought it was so sweet that he took the shots above, but my heart melted when I saw these next two. The camera was set to a shallow depth of field and the focal points had been manually moved off-center. I adore the thoughtfulness and effort he put into the images, but it looks like we might need just one more lesson to master the whole red-dot-goes-on-the-eye thing.
