my 38 in 365 project

I’ve never been big on making New Year’s resolutions, especially when they involve a drastic life change like getting back in the gym. I think resolutions are sometimes abused as a way to put off what you should start doing now.

Instead, I have a created a list of things I want to accomplish in 2010. The list actually started as a 101 in 1001 project, but as I neared #40 I realized that the ideas were flowing at a much slower pace, and I was on the verge of beginning to make things up. Plus, 1001 days is almost three years. My outlook on life today is drastically different than it was in 2007, so I can only hope than by 2013 I will have grown and changed that much more. In that sense I don’t think a 101 in 1001 is practical for me or my business, so I modified it to be my 38 in 365 project. It has a nice ring, don’t you think?

I began working on the list in early December, so some of the goals are already in progress. I have included things that are easy (#34), that are fun (#23) and that are long overdue (#20). Things that will push me (#9), that will stretch my creativity (#28) and that will stretch my budget (#4). Things that I truly hope to accomplish this year. Here they are in no particular order (drum roll please)…

With only 52 weeks in a year and 38* goals, this is a lot to get done. As a self-admitted procrastinator, I hope this public list will hold me accountable for accomplishing each goal. I plan to blog about each of these items as I mark them off, so you may start seeing things pop up pretty soon… If you haven’t already, subscribe to my blog to get an e-mail notification each time I post new content. Like any good train wreck, you’re going to want to stick around and watch it all unfold.

*amended to add #39 and #40 on 2/2/2011

katie o. - I think I’m going to have to totally rip your idea off for 2011. I need to hold myself accountable and actually complete goals I set for myself.

Luke and I hosted Christmas at our house this year and it was lots of fun. Really not as hard as some think. Can’t wait to see you meet your goals!!!January 12, 2010 – 1:12 pm

Allen - I see a handful that you have already accomplished- congrats! I am excited for you. I think we can get a camel at the zoo. Can I photograph that one and the grass cut?? :) Good luck!January 12, 2010 – 8:42 am

Janet - Great List!!! I’m totally inspired to make my own!!! Photos of my own…actually printed, framed and hung in my house is a top one for me! Good Luck!January 11, 2010 – 10:36 am

sheree - Very ambitious list. It would have made me nervous to put it out there for all to see! I can offer to help you with #21 (I have some new fabrics!) and #30 as long as I am invited. I believe you can accomplish everything on that list. Good luck.January 11, 2010 – 10:20 am

Melissa - i love that you cut it down to 38 in 365! i am on number 64 or so of my list… my number 1 goal is to have all 101 listed by Jan 31. i have already crossed a few off my list… and I am keeping up with it on my blog, so that someone else can hold me responsible! It has really helped having a list… every day I think “what can i do today to mark something off my list?” I do agree with you though, i think i will be a different person in 2.74 years and some of those things might not apply, or happen. then i will just move them to new “to-do” list!
loves ya!January 10, 2010 – 8:08 pm

Ravyn Stadick - Good luck! I laughed at #2 … Where are you going to find a camel?? :) I think since I’m a procrastinator, I liked the 1001 days to complete my list, haha.January 10, 2010 – 8:39 am

jennrob - I love it spla! your so ambitious! i too wish you good luck winning #1…you’ve have to let us know so we can vote! i just did #19 and it kicks butt! mine are presciption which rocks even more! i want to do #9 with you please mam! i am running 1.4 miles a day (well 5 days at week during a work break) and have been for 2 1/2 weeks. a co-worker and i hold each other to it, so we hope to continue. i like coe’s idea of cutting grass every friday…it makes your yard look nice AND you get a nice exercise while doing it! #18 would be fun, #11 scary for me! i don’t know what #21 or #10 is, so i look forward to that blog :)January 9, 2010 – 10:02 pm

Coe - You may be a self-admitted procrastinator; I’m a self-proclaimed multi-tasker. I truly believe you can combine #5&#22 and cut number #5 down to 2 days/week. I used to cut the grass every Friday and was amazed at how fast I got into shape. #13 is easy and you can even borrow our boat! Another multi-task, fish on a windy day and you’ll accomplish another portion of #5. It is a MAJOR thigh work-out! Let’s see…what else, I’m on a roll! I know of a great cause for #9 that could lead to number #24. #20 – for a great phone, the IPhone. For great service, the Verizon Blackberry! #25 – Plant’s Framed Art in Trussville did great work with great material (YOURS!) Last, but certainly not least – #29, WAR EAGLE!!!January 9, 2010 – 6:11 pm

Carmen - I have blog-stalked you long enough! Time to comment. I loved the list of goals. There are a few in there that are certainly on mine, and have been for a year or 2! Love your work!January 9, 2010 – 5:14 pm

Heather - I thought “where in the world is she going to ride a camel?” but then I saw Melina’s post. You girls have fun! Please document that! :)January 9, 2010 – 3:07 pm

ashley - I am proud of you! I hope I can be around when you ride that camel!!! Good for you!January 9, 2010 – 2:51 pm

Melina - Can I help with #2? I’ve wanted to ride the camel at the Birmingham Zoo, but don’t want to go by myself. As for #22, you can do it! I did it for the first time this summer, and I rocked. Of course, I do not plan to make grass cutting a habit.January 9, 2010 – 2:16 pm

Katie - this inspires me to make a list. I am excited to see you accomplish them all, but especially the following: #1(and win, of course), #24 (I like this idea alot, how cool). #26 (how cool would that be?) #28(I read a blog post recently that was titled ’30 days of pictures:summer’ and it was beautiful.) good luck!January 9, 2010 – 12:34 pm

Jill - I love your goals! I can think of two you left off the list though. One is slated for sometime in June. The other one is obtainable after May 15. You’re welcome :)January 9, 2010 – 11:54 am

camille - i’m excited… can’t wait to see what happens this year!January 9, 2010 – 11:23 am
