The Nightly News announced tonight that snow has fallen in 49 of the 50 states in America (only excluding Hawaii). For so many people in the US snow is a normal part of winter life. Here in the deep south, this is not the case. It rarely snows here in Birmingham. We MIGHT get a few hours of snow every couple of years, but the snow never sticks for an extended amount of time. Like so many other cities in the south, the forecast was calling for snow on Friday. As soon as the news went out, schools were closed and grocery store shelves were wiped clean. Allen and I woke up the next morning and skeptically dressed for work. Snow…? – Sheesh. Not here. Not in Birmingham.
But what do you know? Around 10 a.m. the heavens opened and the white stuff began to fall. And fall. And fall. And fall. And it was STICKING! The office called it a day around noon, and we all scurried home to play in the snow. When Allen got home a little later, we stepped out into the backyard and took a few quick snapshots to mark the occasion. Par for the course, the southern temperatures are back up above freezing (barely!), and the snow has all melted away.
I have a super fun snow day photoshoot to show you later this week, but until then… a self portrait in our own winter wonderland.
