One of my most challenging and hard-to-tackle projects on my 38 in 365 project list involved creating an office space that I loved. When we first moved into our house three years ago, becoming a photographer (and home-based business owner) was nowhere in my stratosphere of thoughts. Our “office” was really just a spare bedroom where we stuck a desk and a bunch of other junk we didn’t know what to do with. As I begin to spend more and more time in there, the room became a workspace of files and contracts, bills and paperwork. It was a mess. There was no storage and the layout was all wrong for what I needed.
In January, my mom and I spent a full day at IKEA in Atlanta brainstorming ideas for my new home office. It was an overwhelming experience that left me drained both physically and emotionally. I am not a strong decision maker by nature. I will stand in Target reading labels for 30 minutes to decide what shampoo I should buy. The sheer amount of decisions needing to be made that day made my head spin. We drove three hours to Atlanta, spent eight hours roaming the three massive floors at IKEA and three more hours driving home, I was spent. I could have slept for two days. But instead, we were up and at ‘em early cleaning, painting and assembling my new office.
I decided to do a time lapse video of the entire process. I used a wide angle lens to capture as much of the room as I could. The time-lapse control would sound three short beeps before each click of the frame, so we were very “aware” of the camera as you’ll see in a few of the shots. Enjoy!

The short of the project took us three days — one day of shopping and two days of assembly. But in reality, it has been an ongoing two-and-a-half-month-long project. I am still in the process of hanging prints and finding homes for all of my odds and ends, but I finally feel like I have an office space that I truly love. And #4 of my 38 in 365 project can be marked off the list!
