I’d be lying if I said that my eyes didn’t pop just a tad when I read that I’d be photographing four children between the ages of eight months and 15 years. It is by far the largest age span I have photographed, but I was totally up to the challenge. Except you know what? - there was no challenge. Miranda, 15, Rachel, 7, Chandler, 5, and Georgia, 8 mo., were the most loving, attentive group of siblings I have had the pleasure of meeting. They told me that they normally have their photos taken at “the place at the mall”, so this was a new experience for them. It was so cool to see them excited about the “real” backgrounds and being free to run and play during our session.

Georgia was all smiles and giggles while her sisters and brother held and played with her. She had a brief moment of confusion when they got up to let her have a moment in front of the camera alone, but they hung close and oohed and aahed to make her smile.

Chandler is 100% five-year-old boy. Our time together was full of big stories and big laughs and photos that span from super serious to sweet smiles to silly faces. He definitely held his own among three sisters and one photographer!

Rachel is that perfect age between child and preteen. She seamlessly transitioned from skipping rocks with her brother to sitting and shooting the breeze with me about the summer break and going into second grade next fall.

It’s not often that I have the chance to photograph girls like Miranda. She will be turning sixteen in just a couple of months and is just as sweet as she is photogenic. As we talked, I related to her in so many ways. And then I remembered that I am 28 years old. I swear sometimes I really do forget that I am as old as I am. I know you can relate… who’s with me?!

I had so much fun with this group and hope to make it a regular thing. This session definitely reinforces why you should break out of the mold of portrait chain stores and opt for custom family portraits. I see so much personality in these photos, and it goes to show that there is no subsitute for “real” backgrounds and relaxed happy kids. And for that, here’s one more of my favorite group shots.
