rural daydreaming

Yesterday I drove up through the northern half of Alabama to spend a day with my family on the lake. It is a trip I have made many times before,  but I missed my turn without realizing it and was forced to rely on GPS to navigate me through the rural countryside. It was a beautiful blue-sky day, and the perfect time for a little out-of-the-way drive. Sure, rural Alabama has trailors and yards full of old cars and toys that play into the bad stereotypes of our state, but there are also beautiful farms and estates that are remnants of a time gone by. And on this trip, I found myself more and more in awe of each passing plot of land. As a photographer my first thoughts are how the location would photograph. The trees, the barns, the light, oh my. I wished so badly that I could park my car on the side of each property and shoot a collection of rural Alabama.

It took me back to this photo I snapped during the wedding last weekend in Indiana. I really didn’t have any preconceived ideas about what Indiana would be like. As we left the city and made the long drive up north to the wedding, I couldn’t help but notice the flat, never-ending farm land and daydream of how each location would photograph. What followed this photo was seeing that daydream come to life, and I can’t wait to share it all with you soon…

allen - Yeah, not too many wheat fields like that around here, but plenty of hay fields. You should tell the story about that field in the picture :)June 24, 2010 – 12:01 pm
