the weirdo behind the camera

During each photography session, I do my best to tune into the personality of that particular client. Although there are many common connections that my clients have, I am constantly amazed at the individuality and interests that each of them bring to their shoot. On Sunday I had a wonderful maternity session with a sweet family. As I was combing through their images today, I saw this photo and had a good chuckle. From the moment we started shooting, their three-year-old son was interested in my camera. If I got really excited about a certain series, he would run over and ask to see the images. There were a few times that he even sat in my lap and helped instruct his parents for a pose.

As I was snapping some individuals of him, and he asked if he could take a photo. Believe it or not, that isn’t the first time a child has asked to use my camera. I always make up some elaborate excuse to keep it around my own neck and slyly change the subject. But we were sitting in some really soft grass, and he was being really cute. I couldn’t resist. I put the strap around his tiny neck and let him snap two shots. While his mom hoped aloud that her son wouldn’t drop my expensive camera, I was entertained by the sheer pleasure he got out of holding it.

Although all of the settings were already in place, he did a pretty good job. At first I was a little horrified by the way I look, but after dissecting the image I thought it would be funny to kind of explain what was going on. So here is my breakdown of the photo that he took:

A. photographer makes silly face for kiddo with a camera so he’ll think she’s funny.
B. mom wears really cute shirt that makes photographer feel like a scrub.
C. mom wears really cute skirt that makes photographer wish she hadn’t worn pants on a 95-degree day.
D. photographer forgets to wear makeup to session… again.
E. photographer has more bug bites on her body this summer from playing in grass than she has since she was 10 years old. And they itch.

Oh, and for “E.” yes, that is an actual something giving me a good old fashioned blood sucking. I’m curious to know if other photographers are having issues with bug bites this summer. They have been all over me and for the life of me I can’t remember to load up on bug spray before my sessions…

Check back tomorrow for the cuteness the rest of this session has to offer.

Coe - Cute post! But, please, despite their cuteness, DO NOT ever let my kids take hold of your camera…unless you want a new camera, new lenses and some punitive damage compensation. “Cuteness ain’t worth that” my dear!June 30, 2010 – 9:50 am
