when photographers become potters

I feel like a bad little blogger. I have had so much going on lately and little time to spare. One of those “going-ons” was a fun night last week I spent at a pottery party! My friend Ashley Warren coordinated a little get together for some local photographers at a place that is dear to my heart — Cahaba Clayworks pottery studio. Some of you may remember last fall when I blogged about Earthborn Studios which is part of the Cahaba Clayworks group. They have six-week throwing classes for all levels of experience, but also host pottery parties by request. We were mostly hand-building small slabs of clay, but a few brave souls jumped on the wheel for a little advanced throwing.

The basic premise of hand-building is to use forms to sculpt the clay. Cahaba Clayworks provided everything we needed for the pottery party. There were all kinds of tubes and rocks and presses to form shapes and textures.

I don’t know why, but I was feeling extremely uncreative that night. I rolled and re-rolled my ball of clay. Amateurs!

This is my first piece, before and after. Not bad by itself, but it’s pretty embarrassing compared to what some other people created!

The group! left to right: Susanne King, Taylor Haynie, Ashley Warren, me!, Kristie LaRochelle, Kelley Davis and Scherry Bryant.

And our finished products… I told you mine didn’t exactly stack up. No matter, I still had a lot of fun!

melissa g. - I took classes there too, once with Tena and once with Larry. I LOVED it even though I’m not that good. I thought I recognized Tena’s daughter-in-law in some of your photos.July 21, 2010 – 7:31 am
