the birth of carter madison

Until last week I had little experience with a baby being brought into the world. Two years ago I got a phone call that changed the way I felt about the arrival of a new baby. I dropped everything at work, called out behind me as I rushed out the door and drove like crazy to be at the hospital when my nephew Cade was born. As I drove, my thoughts wandered to the day I was born. Who was there? How did it happen? I called my mom to find out about my own birth experience. And though I’d never cared up to that point, the smallest of details fascinated me.

As my friend Ashley got further along in her pregnancy, our conversations turned to photographing the birth. There were obvious logistical problems, considering she lives five hours from me. But we were determined to make it happen. Paranoid that Ashley wouldn’t make it to her scheduled induction, Allen and I went ahead and came down last Thursday to spend a few quiet days with her and help prepare for Carter’s arrival.

There was no holding back the emotions as I watched my friends welcome their first baby into the world. Being there was a blessing in itself, but knowing that Mike, Ashley and Carter have these images to look back on and remember this experience means more to me than anything else.

Just a quick disclaimer that there are a few photos of the actual birth, but the slideshow was posted only after Mike and Ashley watched it and approved. I’ve cried my eyes out twice watching it, so get a tissue ready and enjoy!
