When Ashley told me last Spring that she and her husband Mike were expecting her second baby, there was no question I would do everything I could to be there. I photographed the arrival of their daughter Carter back in August 2010 (also my first experience photographing a labor and delivery) and knew I wanted to be there for baby Evie’s birth too. As Ashley’s due date approached, I stressed for weeks about the potential logistics of a friend in labor and the five hour drive it would take me to reach her. Last Thursday at a few minutes past 11 a.m. Evelyn Ryan was born. Although I feel very strongly about letting each child “own” their birth day without the inevitable comparison to older siblings, I couldn’t stop the flood of memories that returned from two years ago. The same hospital, the same doctor, the same cast of family and friends who came to support Ashley and Mike…
But no matter how many babies Ashley and Mike may have, and no matter how many times I am there to photograph their milestones, I will forever be in awe of the strength and love that shines through them. There is no doubt in my mind that my dear friend Ashley was born to be a mom, and Mike a dad. They do it with such an ease and grace that serves as an example to everyone they know. I am so proud of their new family of four and am excited to watch sweet Evie Ryan grow into the beautiful person I know she will be.
