When Jennifer e-mailed me last fall with the news that she was expecting, my emotions jumped from happy to sad to excited all within a few seconds of each other. I was happy, obviously, because one of my favorite past brides was pregnant with her first baby and was inviting me to be there to capture the delivery. In the same instant I was sad knowing she was due just a few short weeks after my own due date, and I would be smack dab in the middle of my maternity leave. And then as soon as I had the thought, it passed and my sadness turned to excitement realizing that one of the perks of being your own boss is deciding what you can and can’t do during your own leave of absence. If ever there was a time to make an exception, this was it!
And so on the second Saturday in April, just a few weeks before the first anniversary of their wedding, I found myself standing in a hospital room with Jennifer and Kyle as they welcomed their daughter into the world. When I first met Jenn during the planning stages of her wedding, I was struck by how perfectly she fit the role of a bride-to-be. She talked about her plans with such excitement and grace, and I knew she was going to be a beautiful bride. As I watched her spend her first moments with her daughter, I couldn’t help but think back to that time and realize that her perfect role was not that of a bride — it was as a mother.
I could not be happier for Jennifer and Kyle and their families. Jennifer is more than just a former bride to me. She is a friend. And I can’t say how much it means to have been welcomed in and trusted with capturing two of the most important days of her life. Love you girl!
