the birth of lawson reed

Lauren’s husband Reed was thirty minutes into a flight from Birmingham to Houston when she sent a text she knew he wouldn’t receive. “My water broke.” As soon as he landed (and read his wife’s message), Reed was set to catch the first flight home. Meanwhile those around Lauren rallied to support her in his absence. When I arrived to the hospital, Lauren was already laboring through the toughest part of delivery. Things were progressing quickly and a delay in Reed’s return flight had us all watching the clock and saying silent prayers that he would make it in time. Reed made it with just about an hour to spare, and I can honestly say I’ve never been so glad to see someone else’s husband! :)

I have been lucky to be present at many births, but I have to give special props to Lauren for going ALL THE WAY without a bit of pain medication. Along with Reed, the doula, her friend Virginia and her sweet nurse came together to create an amazing support team for Lauren. It was my first experience with a non-medicated birth, and Lauren was a rock star through the whole thing. After so many hours of hard labor, holding her son was marked with such a note of accomplishment. I couldn’t have been prouder of them all.

Baby Lawson was born almost three weeks early and had to be admitted to the NICU shortly after his arrival. By the time I visited the next day, he was doing much better. Just days later he and his parents were on their way home to begin their new life as three. Reliving his birth story through these images gets me every time, and I’m so happy Lauren and Reed have agreed to share it here…
