lauren | bridal portraits

Lauren and Michael were married yesterday on a beautiful – though sweltering hot – August day. Besides the heat exhaustion and sweat, their wedding will likely go down as one of my favorites this year. I have so much to share from their wedding later this week, but first wanted to give you a glimpse of the gorgeous bride via the bridal portraits we took last month. Lauren wanted to have her portraits made near her hometown in Pickensville, AL at the Tom Bevill Visitors Center on Aliceville Lake. I am always up for a new location, and this one definitely did not disappoint!

In a word, Lauren looked gorgeous. I was already in awe of her fun style, and her wedding dress was the nail in the proverbial coffin. I’m horrible with descriptions of fabrics and apparel, but she had the most unique, elegant dress. I have never seen anything similar, and it fit both her personality and an outdoor summer wedding perfectly.

The Tom Bevill Visitor Center is located on Aliceville Lake near a large dam. We were able to walk down onto the dock for a few portraits, which were by far my favorites of the day. Double A-plus to Lauren for choosing such an awesome location for her one-of-a-kind bridal portraits.

I think this was my favorite of the day. I love the symmetry of the dock, the blue water and the touch of late afternoon sun shining on Lauren.

This is the portrait that Lauren and her mother chose to display at the reception. The vertical orientation is perfect for a formal bridal portrait. I love it for all of the reasons above, plus it takes away the distracting elements from the dock so you can focus on the beautiful bride. It was a great choice!

So, not really a “portrait” in the formal sense, but I asked Lauren to walk to the end of the dock, and couldn’t help but snap this as she walked away.

I have a ton of stuff coming up on the blog this week, including Lauren and Michael’s wedding. Be sure to check back tomorrow for the start of some marathon blogging! See you then : )

susie & chris | reception

I am on the home stretch of uploading Susie and Chris’ wedding photos to their online gallery. Because of our semi-slow bandwith, it takes literally hours for a wedding gallery to upload. So in the meantime I thought I’d put together a little tribute to their awesome reception. Their guests were all over the dance floor from the moment the couple was introduced, and the band kept the party cranked up until the very last song. Seriously brides-to-be, your band or DJ is the key to a fun reception. I have been to some fun receptions, and I have seen my share of boring ones too. The music and the level of involvement with the guests is always what makes or breaks the reception.

I don’t often post a lot of reception photos on the blog for some reason, but I always love looking through them. This particular set made me laugh out loud a couple of times and reminded me how much fun we all had. The music starts with a jolt, so consider your faint heart warned. Oh, and pay attention — there is a cameo or two or ten of my cute groomsmen hubby. Enjoy!

our happy place

I’m battling a mad case of writer’s block today. Like type a sentence, delete the whole thing, repeat. Times 1,000. My mental energy is drained and is seriously running on fumes. But instead of continuing to stare at my blank screen, I am moving forward. Moving forward to respond to those long-overlooked e-mails, straighten the clutter that has been piling up around me and tackle the small tasks that have been bogging me down recently. Oh, and maybe once or twice, I’ll stop to recharge my thoughts and daydream of me on the sand with my camera, him in the water with his rod. Gosh I love this place…

rosston at the beach

A few minutes ago, I grabbed my camera and some new products and headed into the kitchen for a little photo shoot. I set everything up just like I wanted, and turned on my camera. I did a quick check to see what was on my memory card and smiled… I turned right around and headed back to the computer to share with you and then e-mail what I found to my friend April.

Last weekend we made an impromtu trip to the beach so that Allen could fish. April and Scott were already planning to be there, so we all pow-wowed at Mike and Ashley’s for the last time before their sweet baby arrives. Since the heat index hovered around 120-degrees the whole weekend and since Ashley is nine months pregnant and April had her 16-month old with her and I’m a wilting flower, there was no actual beach in our plans this trip. But while the boys fished, we busied ourselves with baby preparations and playing with sweet Rosston. On Sunday I realized that I hadn’t used my camera one time all weekend, so I got it out and plopped back down in the arm chair I had been occupying all day.

Rosston toddled over to me and stuck those big blue eyes right up in my camera. I fired off a few shots and then away he went. I had completely forgotten about it until today when I headed into the kitchen. I don’t know about you, but I have missed seeing Rosston’s sweet face around here since we wrapped up his one year session in February. So for that, here a just a few of my favorites. Enjoy!

Photographers note: All images shot with a big sliding glass door to my back for great natural light.
Using my Canon 5DmkII at 50mm, ISO 1600, F/2.0, 1/125 sec.

alana & clay | engaged

Back in April I photographed Crystal and Drew’s wedding. As Crystal dressed that day, she gushed to me about her friend Alana she wanted me to meet. Alana and Clay were engaged, and Crystal just knew that Alana and I would get along. As weddings go, Crystal got busy with getting married and all, and Alana and I did not meet… but I was excited when Alana e-mailed me out of the blue a few weeks later to talk details of her own wedding this September. We met soon after and Crystal was right — I instantly loved the girl!

Alana is so full of life and has a smile that lights up her whole face. I knew the camera would love her and had been looking forward to their engagement session all summer. It was HOT HOT HOT the day of the session. When Alana and I talked earlier in the day, the thermostat at our house read 104-degrees. We waited until the very last minute to start shooting in hopes that it would cool down a bit, which made the light so perfect. Although Clay was admittedly out of his comfort zone, they did an awesome job! I am so happy with how all of the photos turned out, and can’t wait to share the rest.

I don’t know what it is about this one… maybe because it’s so faint and whimsy… but I love it.

This is Alana and Clay perfecting “the gaze” — an inside joke between them that I stumbled upon while we were shooting. You guys keep practicing, cause you know I’m going to pull this one back out at the wedding : )

In the middle of all of this lush green grass and landscape was this old dead tree. Totally random, and totally cool.

Clay’s son Austin was with them during the shoot. He spent a lot of time behind the camera with me, but we were able to capture some great family photos too. Austin is a such a sweet kid, and I love that he was there to keep us all entertained. Here are two quick favorites of the whole family.
